April 2014
I headed back to Vancouver via the bus and ferry to the mainland, making a quick stop for some drinks and food at the Samesun Hostel in Vancouver for a few cheeky beers. Rob was kind enough to let me store my bags at the Front Desk whilst I stayed in the bar until close and caught up with a few people before catching a 6am departure to Los Angeles.
Landing in Los Angeles again, I didn't make the same mistake as last time by getting a $50 USD taxi to Venice Beach but rather catching the bus for a measly $1. Navigating the buses was pretty straightforward and I made it to Venice Beach for the second time. I really dig this place and enjoy spending time on the beach and the boardwalk. Rolling into Venice Beach on the second weekend of Coachella without a hostel reservation wasn't a great idea and after walking around I managed to organise a private room in the Samesun Hostel at Venice Beach. A lovely room overlooking the beach. I messaged the boys Brody, Conor and Shawn, and they'd relocated to Santa Monica as Venice was booked. Happy with my private room for a night, I settled in and went for a wander for the afternoon, before the lads picked me up in taxi to head to Downtown LA to see a Los Angeles Clippers game. A dead rubber but exciting nonetheless to see the Staples Centre. Afterwards, we headed back to Santa Monica for a few drinks and I headed back to Venice Beach for some sleep before the road trip the next day.
Waking up, I was picked up again and we headed to pick-up the rental car, large SUV for the four of us. Having driven on the right hand side of the road in Iceland, the lads tossed me the keys and I drove the first section - Los Angeles to Las Vegas. This was an awesome drive. After a few pitstops to Walmart to pick up camping supplies for Coachella and 40 chicken nuggets for $10 (how can you refuse?) - we arrived at Sin City. What a drive in. The valet parked our car and we went to our suite in the Caesars Palace. Two queen size beds, massive bathroom and an incredible look out over the pool.
After dropping out bags, we decided to hit the pool and have a few beers, before returning back to the hotel to get ready to hit the strip. We hopped from casino to casino all night enjoying and exploring the strip. What a night, and what an adventure to see Las Vegas, one of cities I'd always wanted to see growing up.
The next morning, we went for another wander around the strip, and within Caesar's Palace. I also had time to check out Peter Lik's gallery here, a gallery of his I had heard so much about. Pretty amazing. We grabbed some McDonalds for lunch before getting the car and driving towards the Grand Canyon via the Hoover Dam, the next leg of the road trip.
